Bowls Etiquette

  • Do always dress properly for all games at all times.
  • Do always be on time for a game but if delayed get a message to someone.
  • Do at the start of a game introduce yourself and shake hands with your opponents.
  • Do stand still and be quiet behind the mat when a player is about to bowl.
  • Do compliment your opponent on a good bowl.
  • Do pay attention to the game and don`t wander off your rink during play.
  • Do ensure that when a bowl is played with weight you are well clear of any movement of the jack or bowls.
  • Do make regular checks with your opponent if you are keeping the scorecard.
  • Do become conversant with the laws of bowls and rules of any particular competition you are playing. 
  • Do be the player everyone enjoys having on the green.
  • Do keep out of the head when shots are being decided and do not kick back any bowl until they have been agreed.
  • Do remember the position you are playing and fulfil your own particular function and leave others to do theirs.
  • Do not sit on the side walls.
  • Do not infringe the laws of rink possession.
  • Do not walk along the side of the rink when a player is about to bowl.
  • Do not stand in front of the rink markers.
  • Do not criticise other players on the green.
  • Do not moan about a "lucky wick" we all get our share.
  • Do not discuss who has the shot if in doubt measure.
  • Do not turn your back on a bowl until it has come to a stop.
  • Always be humble in victory and generous in defeat.
  • Do not criticise the green in particular when playing away.
  • At the end of a game shake hands with your opposition and be sociable.
    It is tradition for the home team to offer to buy your opponent a drink from the bar after the game.
